Employment First
Preparing students to find meaningful employment upon completion of secondary education has increased in importance as federal and state mandates direct employment as the first option. Gompers Private School is uniquely qualified to provide employment skills training through the expertise of our adult Day Training and Employment Services programs. Based on the transition plan established by the Individual Education Program (IEP), students are able to explore their vocational interests and experience various levels of vocational training.
Gompers offers two excellent adult programs for students who have completed their secondary education:
The first step to preparing our students for adulthood and the work related skills they will need in the near future is learning how to function independently in the home environment.
Our transition life skills curriculum teaches students how to complete household tasks such as making a bed, folding and putting clothing into a dresser drawer, hanging up clothes in the closet, and sorting bath and kitchen towels. Kitchen duties taught include washing and drying dishes and putting them away in a cupboard. Menu planning allows students to learn to identify food groups, read and understand nutrition labels, and select the ingredients necessary for a healthy meal. Students will even have an opportunity to go grocery shopping, and learn to itemize the cost of foods. Even the most basic skills such as learning to identify various utensils and setting a table are a necessary support in the home environment.
